Summer Camp

Canoes in the fog

Adventure Program Sample Trip Overview & Schedule
Moose River Bow & Rocks
Journey Includes: Canoeing and Outdoor Education
Age Group: 12-14
Difficulty Level: Moderate

The Moose River is a very wild ecosystem with an abundance of wildlife. Eagles, moose, deer, river otter, bear, raccoon, skunk, fishers, fox, and osprey are just a few of the wild creatures we might see along the way. This river completes a true “bow” which means the group will start and finish at the same location without ever having to backtrack. The Moose River waters flow through granite slab shores and bottom, making for a unique ecosystem. Attean and Holeb Ponds have many islands to explore with incredible views. Paddling strokes as well as rescue techniques will be covered throughout the journey.

Trip Overview

Sunday: Arrive at 1PM at Eagles Nest located at CBC. Participants will go over group and personal gear, expedition expectations, certain policies and procedures, and sleep at CBC in tents. Parents/guardians can ask Kyle any additional questions at this time.

Monday: Wake up early and drive to put in point located at the East end of Attean Pond near Jackman Station, ME. Time will be spent reviewing and learning paddle strokes and rescue techniques. First day will include a mile and a half portage to Holeb Pond if daylight allows. Group will paddle approximately 6 miles of flat water on Attean Pond this first day.

Tuesday: Paddle 9 miles to West end of Holeb Pond where we will find the Holeb Brook flowing eventually into the Moose River. Abundant wildlife and significantly different scenery from paddling on the Ponds. Paddle to the Class II rapids of Camels Rips and set up camp.

Wednesday: Traveling from Camels Rips to Spencer Rips, the group will be on the Moose River for all 10 miles of today’s journey. Mosquito Rips (class II) and Holeb Falls (portage) as well as striking scenery are knowns – but what else will we see?

Thursday: Spencer Rips primitive camp site to the take out point on the east end of Attean Pond (11 miles). Here we will arrive at the van and drive back to CBC, set camp, shower, eat, debrief the trip, and rest.

Friday: We will serve breakfast and then get an early start at the cliffs that line the scenic shores of the Atlantic Coast Line here in Maine. Rock Climbing will last through lunch and participants will arrive back at CBC in time to be picked up.
