Backpacking Equipment List

The Layering System (A four step guide to your ultimate comfort!)

Step 1- The Inner Layer- The inner layer should wick away moisture from the skin. Examples include synthetic t-shirts, underwear, and socks.

Step 2- The Middle Layer- The middle layer should provide some insulation and protection from the elements. Ideally it should be synthetic or wool. Examples include fleece or wool pants and shirts.

Step 3- The Outer Layer- The outer layer should provide quite a bit of insulation and good protection from the wind. Examples include fleece or wool jackets, pants, hats and socks.

Step 4- The Shell Layer- Your first defense against the elements! It protects you from wind rain and snow. Must be water proof and preferably breathable. The shell layer should be able to fit over all of your layers comfortably. Examples include coated nylon and Gore-Tex jackets, pants, and boots.
