Backpacking Equipment List The Layering System (A four step guide to your ultimate comfort!) Step 1- The Inner Layer- The inner layer should wick away moisture from the skin. Examples include synthetic t-shirts, underwear, and socks. Step 2- The Middle Layer- The middle layer should provide some insulation and protection from the elements. Ideally it should be synthetic or wool. Examples include fleece or wool pants and shirts. Step 3- The Outer Layer- The outer layer should provide quite a bit of insulation and good protection from the wind. Examples include fleece or wool jackets, pants, hats and socks. Step 4- The Shell Layer- Your first defense against the elements! It protects you from wind rain and snow. Must be water proof and preferably breathable. The shell layer should be able to fit over all of your layers comfortably. Examples include coated nylon and Gore-Tex jackets, pants, and boots. Upper Body__1 knit hat __1 bandana (to keep sun off head) __1 pair sunglasses __2 synthetic or cotton t-shirts __1 mid-weight synthetic long sleeve shirt __1 wool or synthetic sweater or jacket (fleece) __1 highly water resistant or waterproof/windproof jacket Lower Body__2 pairs comfortable, light weight, quick drying shorts, preferably nylon __1 pair comfortable, quick drying pants (the nylon pants that have zip off legs and then convert to shorts are great) __1 pair rain pants (light weight & packable) __2 pair underwear (optional) Footwear__1 pair polypropylene (polyester) socks __2 pair wool or Smart Wool hiking socks __1 pair lightweight hiking boots that have been worn around prior to starting trip to prevent blisters on the trip __1 pair comfortable lightweight, closed-toe walking shoes (for after the hike) Other__2, 1-liter water bottles (Nalgene) __1 sleeping bag rated to 30 degrees, synthetic or down (synthetic preferred) __1 sleeping pad ¾ length or full length, closed cell foam or self inflating __A back pack with comfortable and functioning suspension that fits properly and is 3500-5000 cubic inches depending on torso size __Camera (optional) __Sunscreen (optional) __1 heavy trash bag (to line your pack and sleeping bag in case of rain) __2 flashlights or headlamps __Extra batteries and bulbs for flashlight __1 unbreakable and immortal bowl/plate __Utensils __Toothbrush & toothpaste
